Another year of spring turning into summer for a week. Am I enjoying it? No, why you ask? All my clothes are too big for me, and I still need to buy a summer wardrobe! Lucky Vinted has my back and I've managed to grab some bargains. The one good thing is my garden is no longer filling up with water and drowning my plants, but instead it's baking them to death. I've been watering them when the sun is no longer directly on them so they don't burn (see I do use my brain).
My other biggest battle right now is slugs and caterpillars; they just appear out of nowhere and are out to annoy me. However, I have befriended a magpie who loves my garden and the dried mealworms I put out, it's discovered the slugs and caterpillars and eats them for me, so that is one upside, right? It's actually quite hard trying to grow plants when the elements are making it harder for you. I'm so scared of the next summer heatwave wiping my plants out again and I need to come up with a plan to stop this from happening. If anyone has any tips, let me know, please.
I still can't believe it's already May, where has that time gone because I'm pretty sure it was winter a week ago and I was complaining about how cold I was. We have taken the garden furniture out of the shed, we gutted the whole thing and managed to make so much room inside again, one of the worst jobs ever because things just accumulate in sheds all because we think we need to keep hold of crap. I can't be dealing with hoarding, especially when the room is needed and I want to make more space for my gardening bits inside the shed.
I had been storing loads of seed in the shed and was worried they would not take this year, but they have, especially my sunflower seeds. I have tiny little babies popping up that should be turning into pretty sunflowers in no time. I'm also growing some for my friend Abbie. Keep your fingers crossed that they don't get eaten this time. The bees are loving my garden, it's the one thing I set out to make happen, I strongly believe more people should try and make more of an effort when it comes to creating an environment for them to thrive in, something as simple as a few plant pots full of flowers can make a huge difference even if they have a concrete garden, give our little friends a chance and help save them.
Speaking of bees, this month is no mow may, it involves not mowing your grass/lawn cot the month to help give bees a better chance at pollinating and helping the environment. The plan is to help wildflowers grow, which helps provide food for bees and butterflies. The campaign was started by Plantlife, who do some amazing work. Long grass also helps protect against drought and flooding, soil quality and air quality. Biodiversity is another benefit, helping create a more diverse ecosystem and wild environment. I, for one, am all for this and think it's so important to teach others about why this is needed so they can be inspired to do the same. I can honestly say gardening changed my life; it's helped with anxiety and made me see the world differently. Sharing my life and my love for nature on here with you all makes me feel like I'm doing my part in more ways than one.

All things seem possible in May

Such lovely photos from your garden! I hope your sunflowers do take this year, I know nothing about gardening but I really love wildflowers.
ReplyDeleteI have a concrete roof garden so we can't put too much up there because of the weight plus our climate is so dry, but will definitely consider adding some little potted plants here and there. Maybe some cacti. We don't really see many bees here - we have wasps, hornets, locusts and gecko lizards. The lizards I like lol 🦎 the others not so much.
The sunflowers are coming in really well right now, its a shame the first lot were eaten! The garden is pretty much full of life right now and i would love to see pics of the wildlife where you are
