Royal Cornwall Museum 2024.

Saturday, 1 June 2024

A few weeks ago we visited The Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro, I had never been and James wanted to make the most of the time we had in Truro that day. He bought us both a membership which was £7.50 and can be used as an annual membership for the year, kids under 18 get in for free, pretty reasonable to be honest! Before we went in I checked out on the sign outside what was on show at that time and saw that from march 29th till July 6th they would be show casing the Marvellous Mechanical Museum describing it as: "The Marvellous Mechanical Museum is a visually stunning blend of art, science and engineering full of fun." The exhibition features over 30 different pieces of automata, they're pretty interesting to look at and each very unique, I throughly enjoyed trying them out as did James!

Before we even got to the exhibition the rooms were open filled with cases of history surrounding us, as someone who loves history and artefacts it was amazing to see coins, jewellery, weapons etc from so far back, great way to physically teach children history not only from Cornwall but also from around the world. The museum itself was founded by The Royal Institute of Cornwall in 1818, it was to promote excellence in science and art and to forward the world leading industries which Cornwall is known for. The museum is very welcoming, it made me feel open to exploring further and seeing what else they have to offer in the coming year. They rely on the public support via donations and visitor income so buying a membership helps them in more ways than one including being able to showcase more exhibitions.

My favourite part of the museum was the Egypt collection, there are a vast amount of artefacts and a real life mummy named Temple Priest Iset Tayef Nakht. The coolest thing about this display is a CT scan of his head was taken at Duchy Hospital in Truro which let to the images and date being used by experts in London and Manchester to replicate his-face. My favourite part of the collection had to be a mummified cat called Mao who was randomly found in someones attic in Portscatho, the person who found the kitty generously loaned it to the museum. I know this is quite a short post, I honestly just wanted to include some images mostly to show the museum off, I think it was well worth visit.
